Re-Roof Permit

A permit required in many jurisdictions before replacing or recovering an existing roof covering.
A re-roof permit is required by most Texas municipalities when a homeowner or contractor strips and replaces the existing roof covering (shingles, tile, metal panels) down to the deck, or in some cases recovers it. Requirements vary: some AHJs require permits only for full tear-offs, while others require them for any roof work above a certain valuation. Inspection typically verifies deck condition, underlayment, and proper fastening. Re-roof permits are among the highest-volume residential permit types in Texas, especially after hail seasons.
Why it matters for contractors
Re-roof permits spike sharply after major hail or wind events, giving roofing contractors real-time visibility into storm-damaged neighborhoods and competitor activity — a direct adjacency signal for gutters, siding, and window trades.
